Our meerkats are a recent addition to the farm. They live in an outdoor enclosure with plenty of space to dig! They love to dig all day long!
Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but also eat other animals from lizards, snakes, scorpions, spiders, plants, eggs and small mammals.
Meerkats are small mammals belonging to the mongoose family. They originate from parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, and much of the Namib Desert in Namibia. They are small burrowing animals, living in large underground networks. They are very social, living in colonies averaging 20–30 members.
They can have one to five pups in a litter, with three pups being the most common litter size. Wild Meerkats may have up to four litters per year.
Meerkats love to play and like to be competitive when they do! At feeding time the pups will try and compete with the adults for food. The male and female can fight when she comes into season, as the female asserts her dominance over the mob.
