Sulcata are the third largest
species of tortoises in the world. Only Galapagos
and Aldabra tortoises get bigger!
Sulcata babies, or hatchlings,
will easily fit in the palm of your hand, but
can quickly grow up to 45 cm (18 inches) in
length and 45kg (100lbs) in weight! Sulcatas
reach their full size within 15 - 20 years.
One of the largest Sulcata
tortoises on record reached 76cm (30 inches)
in length, and around 70kg (150 lbs) in weight!
Sulcata tortoises have either
sandy-ivory or yellow-brown skin, and have two
or more very large 'spurs' on their back legs.
Sulcatas are active and like
to burrow, climb and roam about, often in search
of food. They are extremely strong and can break
down fences and even walls. They are very attracted
to items with bright colours.
Where do Sulcata tortoises
come from?
Sulcata tortoises come Africa, close to the
Sahara Desert. In the wild, Sulcatas go underground
for months at a time when it gets too hot or
dry.
What do Sulcata tortoises
eat?
Sulcata tortoises have big appetites. They love
hay and all types of vegetables, as well as
grasses and edible weeds such as dandelion and
clover.
Average lifespan
Sulcatas can live as long as 100 years.
