The word 'raccoon' comes
from the Algonquian word aroughcoune, which
means 'he who scratches with his hands. The
Sioux Indians also called this animal wica,
which means 'little man'.
Raccoons have human-like
hands with thumbs. This means they can easily
open things - like unguarded picnic baskets
and bins!
Raccoons are nocturnal -
which means they are most active at night.
Raccoons don't like the cold,
and in winter they become very dormant although
they don't truly 'hibernate'.
Where do Raccoons live?
Traditionally in woodland areas close to streams
throughout America, although nowadays the raccoon
is at home in towns and cities too.
What do Raccoons eat?
A varied diet of plants and animals - including
grains, acorns, wild berries and fruits. They
also love chicken or duck eggs. In urban areas
they are happy to help themselves to cat and
dog food, and enjoy raiding bins for our leftovers!
Average lifespan
3 - 5 years in the wild, and up to 15 years
in captivity.
