These hedgehogs are African
Pygmy hedgehogs. They are much smaller than
the European hedgehog - the kind you might see
in the wild.
Hedgehogs have a friendly
and curious nature and are intelligent, fun
to play with and happy being on their own. They
are covered in spines or quills. When frightened,
they can roll up into a tight ball. They have
a short, stubby tail which they keep tucked
up close their bodies.
Hedgehog domestication began
in the early 1980s. There are now several colours
of hedgehogs, including albino (white) and pinto
(black and white).
Pygmy hedgehogs make excellent
pets. They don't smell and are easily litter
trained. They love to play with tunnels, mazes,
and specially designed hedgehog wheels. A happy
hedgehog will purr quietly, just like a cat.
Hedgehogs are diurnal, which
means they can be awake during both day and
night.
